Cultural Triangle
Built around an ancient royal reservoir in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, Minneriya is the stage for “The Gathering” — from roughly July to October, hundreds of wild elephants converge on the shrinking tank’s grassy shores in one of the largest Asian elephant congregations on Earth.
Minneriya National Park wraps around the Minneriya tank, a vast reservoir built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD to water the rice fields of the ancient kingdom. Seventeen centuries later, it waters something else entirely. As the dry season bites and the tank recedes, it leaves behind a broad apron of fresh green grass — and the elephants of the surrounding forests come to graze it, in numbers you will struggle to believe.

From roughly July to October, Minneriya hosts The Gathering: herds converge on the tank from across the region, and on a good afternoon you can watch two or three hundred elephants at once — matriarchs leading family groups to the water, calves wrestling in the shallows, young bulls testing each other at the edges. It is one of the great wildlife spectacles of Asia, and it happens a short drive from Sigiriya.
Outside the Gathering season, the elephants move between Minneriya, neighbouring Kaudulla and the Hurulu Eco Park, following the water and the grass. Your guide and jeep driver track the herds day by day and choose the park with the best sightings — which is why a safari here works well in almost any month.

Minneriya’s woodland, grassland and wetland make it a fine birding park too — painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, grey-headed fish eagles and flocks of waders work the tank margins. Toque macaques, purple-faced langurs, sambar and spotted deer are common, and sharp eyes occasionally pick out a leopard or a sloth bear in the scrub.

Safaris run in the afternoon, when the elephants come out of the forest towards the water, and last about three hours. The park lies around 30 minutes from Sigiriya and Habarana, so it pairs easily with the rock fortress, Polonnaruwa and the Dambulla caves. Our 22-day Ultimate Island Experience includes a Minneriya safari, and it can be added to any journey through the Cultural Triangle.
