Ella

About Ella

Some places earn their reputation one hammock at a time. Ella — a small town strung along a single road at about 1,000 metres in the southern hill country — has become one of Sri Lanka’s best-loved stops not because of any single monument, but because of a mood. Mornings begin with mist pouring through the gap in the hills; days are spent on gentle, gorgeous walks through tea; evenings end with wood-fired pizza, fresh juice or a curry feast on a verandah with a view that goes on for fifty kilometres.

The town’s geography is its fortune. Ella sits at the lip of Ella Gap, a dramatic notch in the mountain wall through which, on a clear day, you can see the plains roll all the way to the south coast. Around it rise the peaks and ridgelines that supply the area’s famous hikes, and through it runs the celebrated railway from Kandy — which is how most travellers arrive, grinning, after one of the world’s most beautiful train rides.

The Nine Arch Bridge

A twenty-minute walk from town through tea bushes and bamboo brings you to the Nine Arch Bridge, a 30-metre-high viaduct of brick and stone flung across a jungle ravine in 1921. Built without steel — wartime shortages, so the story goes — it curves elegantly between two tunnels, and when a train rumbles across (several times a day; ask locally for current times) the scene is pure cinema. Go early morning for soft light and thin crowds, order a coffee at one of the small cafés terraced into the hillside above, and wait for the whistle. The walk in along the railway tracks from Ella station is an experience in itself — just stay alert and step well aside for trains.

Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock

Ella’s two signature hikes bracket the town, and they suit very different moods. Little Adam’s Peak is the easy triumph: a 45-minute climb, mostly on a paved path through the Ninety Nine Acres tea estate, ending on a grassy ridge with a panorama over Ella Gap, Ravana’s cliffs and wave upon wave of green. It is glorious at sunrise, when the valley below is a lake of cloud. The name is a nod to its dramatic big sibling, the pilgrimage mountain of Adam’s Peak, several ridges to the west.

Ella Rock is the proper hike — three to four hours return, following the railway line before cutting steeply up through eucalyptus and tea to a summit ledge with an even wider, wilder view. The trail is unsigned and locals will cheerfully offer to guide you; going with one is an easy way to support the village economy and skip the wrong turns. Start early, carry water, and expect the summit to disappear into cloud by late morning.

Waterfalls, tea and slow afternoons

Five kilometres down the winding road toward the coast, Ravana Falls drops in broad, photogenic tiers right beside the highway — thunderous in the rainy months, gentler but swimmable in pools below during the dry season. The falls take their name from the Ramayana: local legend holds that King Ravana hid the princess Sita in caves within these very cliffs, and a signposted cave temple above the road leans into the tale.

Back in the hills, small, family-run tea factories around Ella offer refreshingly informal tours — an engaging half hour among rollers and drying racks, capped with a bright cup of the local high-grown. And then there is the café scene: for a town of its size, Ella eats remarkably well, from rotti stands and ambitious coffee roasters to cooking classes where you learn to build a ten-dish curry spread from scratch.

Getting there — take the train

You can drive to Ella from Kandy in around four hours or climb up from the south coast in three, but if your itinerary allows, arrive by rail. The Kandy–Ella stretch, especially the final hours from Nanu Oya through Haputale, is the most scenic railway ride in Sri Lanka — tea gardens tilting past the windows, vendors selling wade and roasted peanuts, children waving from every crossing. Reserved seats book out weeks ahead in high season (December to March); the unreserved carriages always have room for one more and arguably more atmosphere. Pair the ride with a night or two in Nuwara Eliya to break the journey among the tea estates.

Know before you go

  • Ella’s weather is a lottery of sun and mist year-round; the driest, clearest months are generally January to April, while the inter-monsoon rains around October and November bring dramatic clouds and full waterfalls.
  • Evenings are genuinely cool — pack a light layer for dinner.
  • Hike early. Both trails are at their finest before 8 am and their busiest by mid-morning.
  • The town’s popularity means the main street can feel lively in season; accommodation on the ridges above trades a short tuk-tuk ride for silence and views.
  • Leeches make an appearance on shaded trails after rain — long socks and a flick of salt sort them out.

Ella is the exhale in the middle of a Sri Lanka itinerary, and it anchors our 11-day Highlights & Scenic Escape — train ride, Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak included.
