Hill Country
Perched on a knife-edge ridge at the southern rim of the hill country, Haputale is tea country at its most dramatic — mist pouring over the Dambatenne estates, the plains falling away to the south coast, and Lipton’s Seat, where Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his tea empire, waiting at sunrise.
Haputale sits right on the lip of the hill country. On one side of the ridge, the tea estates roll north towards Nuwara Eliya; on the other, the land drops more than a thousand metres to the southern plains, and on a clear morning you can see all the way to the coast. It is a small, unpretentious town — a railway station, a market street, a few guesthouses clinging to the slope — and that is exactly its charm: this is where the hill country feels least visited and most itself.

The essential Haputale experience is an early start for Lipton’s Seat, the lookout high above the Dambatenne tea estate where the Scottish tea baron Sir Thomas Lipton is said to have sat to admire his plantations. The road climbs through immaculate rows of tea; go at dawn, before the cloud rises from the valleys, and the panorama takes in a dozen ranges and, on the clearest days, the glint of the southern sea. Walk back down through the estate as the pluckers start work, and stop at the Dambatenne tea factory, built by Lipton in 1890, to see the whole process from withering to sorting.

Just outside town, Adisham Bungalow — a Tudor-style country house built by an English tea planter and now a Benedictine monastery — sits in gardens that feel lifted from the Cotswolds; the monks sell homemade jams and cordials. The Haputale stretch of the Kandy–Badulla railway is one of the line’s most spectacular, and the train between Haputale and Nanu Oya or Ella is a scenic journey in its own right. Walkers have the pick of estate paths and ridge trails, with Horton Plains and World’s End within easy reach.
Journeys
Take one as it is, or ask your specialist to change it.

Haputale is cool year-round — pack a warm layer for the mornings. January to April brings the clearest views; mist rolls in most afternoons whatever the month, which is why sunrise is the time for the lookouts. Haputale features on our 15-day Grand Island Discovery and the 22-day Ultimate Island Experience.

Your specialist will build it into a private journey, with the right stays and the right pace.
