Colourful fishing boats moored along the Negombo lagoon canal

Negombo

Twenty minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport, Negombo is the easy first and last night of a Sri Lanka journey — a laid-back fishing town of palm-lined beach, Dutch-era canals and a lagoon crowded with brightly painted boats, where the morning fish market is one of the liveliest sights on the coast.

About Negombo

Most travellers meet Negombo in the dark — a short transfer from the airport, a cool room, the sound of the sea — and only discover it properly the next morning. It is worth the discovery. Negombo is a working fishing town first and a beach town second, and that order of priorities gives it a character the purpose-built resorts further south can’t match: outrigger canoes pulled up on the sand, nets drying in the sun, church bells on Sunday morning and a lagoon busy with boats long before breakfast.

The fish market and the lagoon

Get up early for the Negombo fish market, one of the largest on the island. By first light the catch is coming ashore — tuna, seer fish, prawns, crab — and auctions run at a shout along the harbour. Behind the main market, acres of fish are laid out to dry on mats in the sun: an extraordinary, pungent, photogenic scene. The Negombo lagoon behind town is a maze of mangrove channels and fishing villages, best explored by small boat in the cool of the morning, with egrets, kingfishers and cormorants for company.

Negombo’s Catholic heritage — a legacy of Portuguese and Dutch rule — gives it the nickname “Little Rome”. St Mary’s Church, with its painted ceiling, is the town’s grand centrepiece, and the Dutch canal that once carried cinnamon to Colombo still threads through the town and lagoon.

A soft landing — and a gentle farewell

Negombo’s great virtue is position. After a long-haul flight, a first night here means no long drive before you sleep; after two weeks on the road, a last night here means a relaxed transfer to the airport rather than a dawn dash from the hills. The beach is long and golden, the sunsets over the Indian Ocean are reliably spectacular, and the seafood restaurants along Lewis Place serve the morning’s catch grilled the same evening.

When to go

Negombo follows the west-coast calendar: November to April is the dry season, with calm seas and clear evenings. May to October brings the southwest monsoon — showers and rougher seas — but the town, the market and the lagoon remain rewarding year-round, and as a first or last night it works in any month. Our 15-day Grand Island Discovery begins here, and the 22-day Ultimate Island Experience ends here.
