Kandy

About Kandy

Every Sri Lankan journey seems to pass through Kandy, and for good reason. Folded into a bowl of green hills at 500 metres, the city held out against three European colonial powers for nearly 300 years, falling to the British only in 1815 — the last capital of the last Sinhalese kingdom. That long independence left it with a cultural confidence you can still feel: in the drummers and dancers, in the craftsmen’s workshops, and above all in the golden-roofed temple by the lake that houses the most sacred Buddhist relic in the country.

Today Kandy wears several hats at once. It is a bustling, horn-happy commercial hub; a UNESCO World Heritage sacred city; and the gateway between the ancient plains of the Cultural Triangle and the cool tea slopes of the hill country. Give it a night — ideally two — and it rewards you with an evening ritual unchanged for centuries and one of the loveliest lakeside strolls in Asia.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The Sri Dalada Maligawa — the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — is the reason Kandy matters. Within its gilded inner shrine rests a tooth of the Buddha, brought to the island in the 4th century and treated ever since as the palladium of Sinhalese kingship: whoever held the relic held the right to rule. The temple complex, part of Kandy’s UNESCO listing, is a warren of carved pillars, painted ceilings, moonstone thresholds and flower-heaped altars.

Time your visit for one of the daily puja ceremonies, when thundering drums and reedy horns announce the opening of the shrine room and pilgrims in white file past with lotus blossoms and jasmine. The evening puja is the most atmospheric — incense, candlelight, and a crowd that is overwhelmingly local. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, remove shoes and hats at the entrance, and never pose with your back to a Buddha image. Ceremony times shift slightly by season, so check current times locally.

Each July or August the relic takes to the streets in the Esala Perahera, ten nights of processions with fire dancers, whip crackers, tens of drummers and lavishly costumed elephants — arguably the grandest festival in South Asia. If your dates align, plan far ahead: the city fills completely.

Around the lake and into the hills

Kandy Lake was created in 1807 by the last king, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, and its palm-fringed perimeter path is the city’s living room. Walk it in the late afternoon, when monitor lizards sun themselves on the banks, egrets stalk the shallows and the temple’s golden canopy catches the last light across the water.

Kandy Lake and the golden-roofed Temple of the Tooth at dusk

For the classic postcard view, climb (or drive) to the Arthur’s Seat viewpoint above the southern shore, where the whole lake, temple and tiled rooftops arrange themselves neatly below. In the evening, catch a Kandyan dance performance — an hour of acrobatic drumming, spinning plate dancers and a fire-walking finale that traces its lineage to ancient healing rituals of the hills.

Peradeniya — the royal botanical gardens

Six kilometres west of the centre, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya are quite simply among the finest in the tropics — 147 acres looped by the Mahaweli River, first laid out as a royal pleasure garden and formalised by the British in 1821. Give it a half day: the avenue of Cook pines that lean in courtly unison, the giant Javan fig spreading its canopy over 2,500 square metres, the orchid house, the great lawn where colossal fruit bats hang in the trees like dark lanterns. It is a favourite of school groups and courting couples alike, and an easy, restorative counterpoint to the temple crowds.

The train into tea country

Kandy is where one of the world’s great railway journeys begins. The line to Badulla climbs slowly out of the city through tunnels and tea terraces, past waterfalls and cloud-wrapped ridges, reaching Nuwara Eliya’s station at Nanu Oya in about four hours and laid-back Ella in six to seven. Reserved seats sell out well in advance in high season; unreserved carriages are part of the adventure if you don’t mind standing with a breeze in the doorway. Either way, sit on the right-hand side heading uphill for the best of the views.

Practical notes

  • Kandy is about three to four hours from Colombo by road or rail, and 2.5 hours from Sigiriya’s rock fortress — which is why it anchors the middle of most island circuits.
  • The climate is kinder than the coast: warm days, cool evenings, and showers possible in any month. October to December tends to be wettest; January to April the most reliably bright.
  • Temple mornings are quietest; puja hours are busiest but most rewarding. A modest scarf in your daypack solves any dress-code surprise.
  • Central Kandy traffic is dense — walk the compact core rather than driving it, and keep an eye out for the crossings.
  • Combine your visit with a spice garden or a tea factory on the road in or out, and try the street-side samosas near the market.

We weave Kandy into every one of our tour packages and use it as the launch point for the hill country on the 11-day Highlights & Scenic Escape — temple at dusk, train at dawn.
